Anthony Lee

Anthony Lee is an award-winning singer songwriter and stand up comedian from Newcastle Australia.He writes a wide range of music from comedy and electronic pop to heartfelt ballads.

He was born in Newcastle 15th October 1960.As a young child he would mimic his grandmother who played the piano.His grandfather,a self -taught violinist, recognized his ability at an early age and paid for his first year of piano tuition.Anthony would be picked up from primary school at lunchtime to entertain at Rotary and benefit concerts at the age of 8.He completed his studies at Newcastle Teachers College and became a primary school teacher still writing songs and performing in bands and duos.After college he moved to Sydney and pursued music full time with an assortment of different collaborations from 1920′s to electronic pop.In 1981 he released the melancholy  piano string album”Rainy Nights”which showed his depth of lyric and personal side. He performed in many piano bars from Bondi Junction to Coogee, Kings Cross to Darlinghurst

He met a large vivacious woman in a Darlinghurst in piano bar in 1984  who’s big song number “The Rose “by Bette Midler showed her fragility but it was more her comical side that caught the attention of Lee, and they soon formed a musical comedy duo”Tony Leen and D’mama” cashing in on the relationship of the  sneering straight man and voluptuous big lady.They appeared on Hey Hey it’s Saturday and the Mid Day Show as well as supporting “Jimmy and the Boys” and Crowded House at their record launch in a night club in inner Sydney.

Whilst playing in a bar in Coogee Anthony struck up an unlikely collaboration with an androgynous looking DJ who came on after his act and played electronic pop music.Lee soon realized the possibilities of merging his music with synthesizers and the duo “Somewhere Nowhere” was formed in 1984.The group had much airplay on Triple JJJ and also in Spain.He released Cairo in 1986 which charted in Newcastle and had airplay in Canada.The had radio airplay throughout Europe with their first single “No Change in Me” that also featured on a European  pop program

Anthony opened the prestigious Lindemann Island resort in 1987 and moved to Queensland in 1988 where he recorded  his next album “Everything You Say” a meld of soul and beautiful  ballads .In 1991 he appeared again on Hey Hey it’s Saturday as his comedy character Doug Kembrey with his comical “Speech Impediment Song”After looking in Queensland for a D”mama replacement ,he came across Jill Hinks a Bette Middler look alike where he quickly formed the musical comedy duo “Bawdiville” who appeared all over the Gold Coast in the late 80′s and early 90′s.

Still with his serious side to music Anthony wrote and produced the album “Peace of the Pleiades” in 1993 after a spiritual awakening that took him into a new direction.The album wasn’t released as Lee wasn’t overly happy with the production.

In 1993 he moved back to Newcastle and took up residence at the Brewery on Queens Wharf as piano man and won the prestigious Newcastle Star awards as best soloist, rock song writer,ballad writer and Performer of the year.In 1993 he also became the resident stand up comedian for the iconic Wog Rock cafe  a residency for 7 years winning awards as a stand up comedian.

He released “A Girl Like That” in 2006,a soulfull  album of life’s observations with the delicate song he wrote for the birth of his son in 2000 “Beautiful thing”  He appeared many times on national television and proved himself as a most versatile performer.he released several charting singles and 6 original albums.In 1997 he wrote the national tribute to Princess Diana .More recently he tours with his stand up comedy show and writes music for film and television.His music is categorized into various projects including :Comedy ,soul ,funk and ballads

“The Plastic Palm Quartet”1920′s jazz style comedy creation recapturing the fun of the roaring 20′s and his other styles such as soul funk,pop and ballads.He also writes film, television music and online jingles.He has released 6 original albums and has appeared on national television ad campaigns

Anthony is also an accomplished soloist/keyboard player performing for corporate functions.He also performs as the iconic “Carlos Hopontopofus” the Greek Love God in his hysterical one-man show.“Carlos Hoponotopofus” perfect for weddings, parties and events.
